Millions of Jobless Americans File for Disability

Reports have found that being unemployed for long is driving many American's mad and causing them to file for disabilty when there unemployment compensations run out. The Post wrote that about 10.5 million people, or 5.3% of the population, recieved disabilty checks in the month of January. This was about a 18% jump since before the recession. From those claiming for disabilty, 43% of them are claiming for mental health illnesses and many are former laid off white-collar work.

Overall, the jump in the numbers is pretty dramatic! I understand people are getting depressed, having anxiety, and other medical conditions because of the stress of not having a job...But this may be a red flag for many of the politicians trying to help and change America. We have way too many problems going on now days for young americans to have to worry about such as rising costs of daily life, getting proper schooling, social security, and something needs to be done instead of "bickering" back and forth.

  1. In what sense may this be a red flag for politicians? As an indicator that people need help, so they should word together to come to a compromise over policies?

That's is a pretty dramatic jump. My impression has been that it's difficult to get disability approval, so it's interesting that so many are going this route. I wonder if we'll start hearing in the media that this is an abuse of the system?
